After Winslow #1

I'm treading very lightly here. But after weeks of not touching my brushes, I decided to plunge in (excuse the pun) and try walking in Homer's shoes.

I am reading an excellent book: American Tradition In Watercolor" And was just itching to try a Winslow after looking at his turbulent seas.

Admittedly this is just an tentative sketch, but it felt exhilarating to try his method. I think I will do more of this!

  1. Zan, this is lovely. I really like the unusual way you did the water. I find looking at and working with the traditional masters of the field really helps one see better and understand the techniques better, too.
Now how about a Sargent? :)

  2. Hi Rhonda,
I just ordered 2 books from my Library. One about Homer and the other? You guessed it Sargent. I am by far more attracted to the light and colors of Sargent, but something about Homer just put a burst of energy in me today. I think I will stick to him like a leach for a while and see where that leads me.

Next up: Sargent (if I am feeling dangerously foolish)

You said it perfectly. trying this little sketch, as tentative as it is, made me see and feel so much more what Homer was doing and appreciate his work all the more.

  3. Ahhh, Winslow Homer, and you've created a wonderful rendition in his style. Maybe I need to look at his paintings again to nudge me to take that Pacific NW WIP off the back burner. Judy
